After a successful campaign by various organisations, Balfour Beatty pulled out of the controversial Ilisu Dam project in Turkey.
Without Balfour Beatty, the project looked as if it was about to crumble. However, Siemens have now shown an interest in taking the project on.
If built the dam would:
- make up to 78,000 people homeless
- drown dozens of towns and villages
- cause water conflicts with Syria and Iraq
Balfour Beatty withdrew from the dam project after it was clear there was little public support for it.
Siemens have provisionally bought Austrian company VA tech. VA tech is the only foreign company involved in the project.
