Vote matters to Turkey - Ankara silent, watches Iraqi referendum

Turkish officials have avoided public comments on Iraq's constitution, which is being put to public referendum today, but is closely monitoring the transition in the war-torn neighbor.

In past comments, officials said Ankara had no problem with a federal regime for the neighboring Iraq, as envisioned in the new constitution, but emphasized clearly that Iraq's territorial integrity must be protected, as disintegration of the country would lead to regional instability.
