Alcohol problem far more than meets the eye

Mey İçki CEO Galip Yorgancıoğlu said on Monday that a 70 percent tax imposed on rakı encouraged illegal production of the drink at a time when illegally produced alcoholic beverages have flooded the market.

He said high taxes combined with considerable profit from illegal production is making bootlegging that much more attractive. “The government aims to take in more revenue through higher taxes but instead is losing out to illegal production,” he said
