`Santa: roots in Turkey but made in America'

THE traditions of Christmas have been with us for centuries. Santa Claus is as old as the North Pole.

But have they? And is he?

It may surprise you to discover that, while Santa has his roots in third-century Turkey, he was made in America.

Santa can be traced back to St Nicholas who was Turkish and known for his good works and as a protector of children. Hanging up Christmas stockings, for instance, is thought to have started after he tossed coins down a chimney to help three poor sisters and they landed in the stockings they had hung up to dry by the fire.
