After a month, 'red-light streets' debate is still tough issue for govt given Bursa municipality alcohol restriction decision
After a cooling-off period on the debate regarding the restriction of selling and consuming alcoholic beverages, a town municipality in Bursa on Friday mapped out "alcohol zones."
The term “alcohol zones,” where the selling and serving of alcoholic beverages is allowed, have been dubbed by the press “red light areas.” They first emerged after a municipal law regarding alcohol restrictions went into effect in June. It generated harsh debates on whether or not it’s an acceptable democratic practice and also gave rise to old fears about the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's Islamic leanings. The law authorized municipalities to restrict serving alcoholic beverages to entertainment centers located in certain areas of a city.
