Military tribunal sends retired admiral to jail

The General Staff's military tribunal yesterday sentenced former Turkish Naval Forces Commander retired Adm. Ilhami Erdil to two years and six months in prison for unfairly acquiring wealth.

Erdil had faced charges on five counts of misconduct in office, one count of abuse of office, and for gaining unfair wealth.

It was a first for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in its history, with the military tribunal sending a retired admiral to jail. The military tribunal also sentenced Erdil to five months in prison for abuse of office. The court also decided to confiscate two pieces of Erdil's real estate and discharge him from the TSK.
