German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder's Socialist Democrat Party (SPD), which came to power in 2002 by a difference of only 6,000 votes, closed the gap in Sunday's elections against main opposition parties CDU/CSU with the votes of Turkish German citizens. With an estimated 80% of the 600 thousand Turkish voters going to the polls, again an estimate of 80% of these votes are thought to have been cast for Schroeder's SDP party.
